There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle, or the mirror that reflects it. – Edith Wharton

Outshine NW is a small non-profit organization based in Seattle, WA that serves communities by promoting LGBTQ health and equity through education and advocacy. We actively engage medical professionals, social service providers, and community members from all walks of life to bridge communication divides and heal people.

In a literal sense, “outshine” means two things, the distinction between which sits at the core of Outshine NW’s values:

Outshine verb
1 (transitive) to shine more brightly than
2 (intransitive) to shine forth

When referring to an object, outshine means “to shine more brightly than” another object. If we treat one another as objects or allow others to treat us as objects, brightening the world becomes a competition in which someone must lose — who can outshine whom to get ahead? Who will be marginalized so that another may temporarily break free from the margins?

But when we approach our work from a place of respect for all humanity and stand in solidarity with one another — when we refuse to be objectified and refuse to treat others as objects — we shine forth. When we achieve solutions from a position of deep appreciation for one another’s unique features, we brighten the world.

Outshine NW honors and builds upon a trail of social justice blazed by visionaries and advocates across the ages. We recognize and encourage the potential of each person to make a positive impact on the world, beginning within, by cultivating genuine understanding and gratitude for all people.

Through empathy, the courage to speak our own truths, and the willingness to sincerely hear an unfamiliar perspective, we believe that all injustice can ultimately be overcome.

In this spirit, Outshine NW provides trainings for healthcare and social services providers, consulting and advisement for research scientists, and other resources for those whose work impacts the Trans community. We recognize that no two organizations or professionals will need the exact same support from us, and we tailor the resources we provide to meet the individual needs of the community being served.
